TAKE A SHOPPING TRIP IN
YOUR CLOSET:
SORT
1. Break up all suits and sets. Sort all clothing by type
(tops, jackets, skirts, pants).
2. Sort each clothing type by color.
3. Remove any items that you know you will not wear.
4. Go through the rest, piece by piece, and ask
yourself:
- Have I worn this in the last 6 months?
- If the answer is NO, ask yourself “Why?” (too big,
too small, uncomfortable fit or material, unflattering
style or color?...)   Try it on if you can’t remember.
- Does your answer justify keeping it?  REALLY???
- Remove all additional unworn items.
5. Box up or, at least, set all the unworn items apart
from those you are keeping.

STYLE
1. Pull out looks you like from magazines.
2. Try to create those looks with similar items in your
own closet.
3. Try the outfits on to make sure you are comfortable
in that look, and that it’s flattering to your body type.
4. Take photos of the outfits, so you can have your own
Look Book to trigger your memory when you’re
getting dressed, or so you can plan your outfits for the
week.

SHOP
1. Make a list of items needed to complete or update
outfits.
2. Put the list in your wallet.
3. Now, when you go shopping, you have a list of
specific items you are looking for.   This will help keep
you from purchasing more items that just sit in your
closet, never to be worn!

MAINTAIN
Follow these tips each spring and fall.  After the
initial cleaning, it should go much more quickly.  And
hopefully, you will have fewer items (or none at all)
that never get worn!
AVOID COMMITTING A "CRIME OF FASHION":
1. Don’t bare too much.
It’s a simple formula.  If you are baring a lot of leg, cover up on top.  If you are exposing your
2. Don’t draw attention to the wrong places.
If your legs are not your best asset, but you have a small waist, go for a wide leg pant with a
tucked in blouse and cinch a belt at your waist.  Stay away from wearing short skirts and
shorts.  Accentuate what you want others to notice and camouflage parts you want to hide.
3. Don’t go too low.
That goes for low rise pants as well as cleavage–bearing tops.  No one wants to see your thong!
4. Don’t sacrifice comfort.
If you wear something you're not comfortable in.  You will be self conscious, uncomfortable, it
will show in the way you carry yourself.
5. Don’t get too comfortable.
Sweat pants and pajama bottoms should not be worn outside of your home.  How much effort
does it require to put on a pair of jeans, a nice t-shirt and a cute pair of flats.  You'll be happy
you did if you run into someone you know!
6. Don’t underestimate the importance of your shoes and handbag.
Your shoes and hand bag can make or break your entire outfit.  If you are not a shoe and
handbag fanatic, just make sure that you have a few pairs of versatile shoes and a neutral
handbag.  You don't have to go for the top designer brands, but something classic in neutrals.
And replace before they begin looking worn.
7. Don’t go bra-less.
It just looks cheap.  Carefully consider purchasing any top that will require a special bra (i.e.
strap-less, one shoulder or halter); and try it on with the bra you intend to wear with it before
buying it.
8. Don’t match everything.
If you keep a common color scheme going on in your overall outfit, you can mix patterns and
jewelry.  Eclectic is more fun, interesting and stylish than "matchy-matchy"!
9. Don’t buy for vanity
Sizes vary from one brand to another.  No one will know (or care) what size you are wearing,
but if the clothes don't fit you as they should, everyone will notice.  If you can't get a perfect
fit, and it's a must-have, take it to a tailor.
10. Don’t go overboard.
Exaggeration on the runways and in magazine ads is used to get a point across and draw your
much of a good thing is never a good thing!  Don’t try to incorporate too many trends into
your outfit.  Think proportion and balance in your overall look.  Check yourself out in full
length mirror before leaving the house.
